Many Texas gobblers heard more hens yelping Saturday morning than they had put to roost the night before. Were they confused about the abundance of new hens in their area? Many of them were not. They flew down with the hens roosting nearby and stuck tight to them as the 2007 spring turkey season began. A strong frontal system ripped through the state on Friday, filling up many of the water-starved lakes in its path.

In deep-south Texas, Chris Lee, owner of Rocking L Outfitters, hosted a group of hunters from Kentucky.

Wade Lewis shot two birds on a 45-minute hunt Saturday afternoon.

Lee rousted the hunters from their naps and sat with Lewis. He called in the first bird in five minutes. “The bird came in drumming and spitting,” Lee said. When he was five yards away, Lewis pulled the trigger. The two stayed in the same place and within 30 minutes another tom – this time with a hen - came to within 12 yards. Lewis tagged out his two-bird limit.

“Opening morning we had a lot of lighting but it didn’t start raining until later,” Lee said. “At 8:30 am, we had birds gobbling their heads off. Two of my guys shot birds that morning and the others wanted to chase birds, not sit and wait. This was not very successful. As soon as they left a spot, a bird would show up. About all they got was all of their equipment soaked from the midday rain.”

On opening day, Bryan Moore guided two Louisiana hunters near Newcastle in north central Texas. “The birds gobbled on the roost,” he said, but they didn’t come down until late – they hung around the roost until around 10 o’clock. They were severely henned up.” Moore used a hen and jake decoy combination to coerce a few toms away from the ladies, and the two hunters took three birds.

The guides were optimistic on Sunday.
“This morning we woke up to a light drizzle and the birds got quiet once they hit the ground,” Lee said. “It looks like this afternoon is going to be good. The sun is coming out and it’s getting hot.”
