![]() Hard work and patience paid off for Brock Benson, a Grayson County lawyer who claimed a buck scoring 206 5/8 during opening weekend of archery season. As of Oct. 19, Brock Benson’s buck held first place in the low-fence division of several Texas deer contests. “Basically, this was a deer we found early in the summer,” said Benson, a Sherman attorney. “We patterned him though late summer, and we had a pretty good idea where he was going to be.” Opening weekend was hot and windy in North Texas, just like it was in most parts of the state. But Benson’s preparations put him in a good position to claim his trophy. “I got him with a good 17-yard shot,” he said. “We had been following his development all summer, so we knew he was a huge deer. “But we didn’t know he had enough points to gross 206 and 5/8s.” The massive buck is the latest trophy to be taken in Grayson County, which has produced several 200-class bucks in recent years. Among them was the legendary Duncan buck, which scored 225 7/8; it busted all kinds of records, and not just in Texas. Game Warden Dale Moses, himself a bowhunter, was impressed with Benson’s trophy, which sported a largely vertical rack with 21 countable points. “His score is better than 200, but he looks like a typical (point) deer,” Moses said. “He’s got kickers and stickers, but no drop tines. “He carried so much mass; the picture just doesn’t do it justice.” |
