ImageAs we approached the end of June, the 19th Annual State of Texas Anglers Rodeo already had eleven tagged redfish caught, but surprisingly none could be confirmed as winners. Thanks to persistence and the wise decision to register, Galveston resident, Henry Anderson ended the losing streak. After winning many fishing tournaments throughout his life dating back to tarpon tournaments in the 1950s, Anderson for the last few years has faithfully entered the CCA Texas/STAR setting his sights on the Upper Coast Speckled Trout or Tagged Redfish Divisions.

This year he was determined to focus on Redfish. On June 29th, that determination paid off. Anderson and his son left out of the Galveston Yacht Basin Sunday morning at approximately 6:15 am. Their original plan was to go to the South Jetty, but after noticing the wind picked up, they decided to go to one of their favorite redfish spots.

The fishing was slow, but around 8:00a.m., Anderson hooked a red and after netting it noticed that special little red tag and, as you can imagine, was beyond himself with excitement! After studying the tag, all that could be made out was CCA. With high hopes that the tag was for 2008, but not sure, Anderson told his son they needed to immediately go back to STAR weigh station, GYB Bait & Tackle and get this fish turned in. On their way back, as luck would have it, they ran across a boat that had broken down in the channel. They decided that being good Samaritans should take priority, and towed the boat in. Needless to say, Anderson's nerves were shot after all that. When they finally got there, the weigh station confirmed that Anderson landed 2008 tagged redfish #T840. At that moment, Anderson became so excited that his son and the weigh station staff had to make him sit down for a few minutes. Anderson went on to successfully pass the required polygraph exam to become 2008's first angler to be declared a winner in the Texas Ford Dealers Redfish Division. Anderson will be the lucky recipient of a 2008 Ford F-150 "Texas Edition" truck with a Triton 22LTS, Mercury 150 motor and McClain trailer. There's still plenty of time to enter! The 2008 CCA Texas/STAR continues through Monday, Sept. 1 (Labor Day) at 5:00p.m. A warning to all anglers fishing the Texas Gulf Coast, the bad news is a total of TWELVE tagged redfish have been caught, but only ONE of the twelve will be driving home a truck/boat prize, so far. The good news is three of the eleven caught by non-registered anglers were rereleased, meaning there are still FIFTY-ONE redfish out there waiting to be caught!!!
