Fishing out of a pontoon boat, Steve Rutledge of Kountze brought home the big prize at the Dodge Mega Bass event at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. His 11.68-pound bass, caught in the two-day tournament’s second hour. With nearly 1,500 anglers and 12 pickups given to the top hourly winners, the event claims the title of the world’s richest two-day hourly bass tournament. Participants chose when they weighed their catch, gambling on which hour they will fare best in. The prize for largest bass of the event was a Dodge mega cab valued at more than $44,000. Rutledge caught his fish in Ayish Bayou. “My brother caught several small ones, then hooked into a big one that broke him off,” Rutledge said. “While he was re-tying I pitched my jig into the same area. The next thing I knew I had one on.” Lonnie Stanley of Stanley Jigs in Huntington won the third hour with his 9.26-pound bass caught on a 1⁄2-ounce football head jig in 10 feet of water.
