ImageKen Geiger picks out a bird as a covey of quail bust out of the tall grasses in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. On his trip with the Rancho Ala Blanca lodge, Geiger's hunting party experienced 63 covey rises on the three day trip in early November. The coveys were averaging 15-20 birds.

Most of the region experienced heavy summer and fall rains, thanks to a couple of hurricanes. While the quail experienced late hatches, the grasses and brush will remain very high until cold temperatures arrive.

“One of the dogs went on point and was standing up on her back legs, her head was all that was showing as she pointed the covey, Geiger said. “It took us a little time to get over there and she fell down but came right back up on point with her nose high in the air.

All you could see was her head above the grass. I’ve never seen a dog point standing up.”
