When David J. Sams traveled to South Africa last summer for safari, he wanted a rugged case that would tote two rifles — a Ruger No. 1 and a Remington 700.
The founder of Lone Star Outdoor News settled on the AT-2 Gun Safari case from Americase, Inc., based in Waxahachie.
The aluminum case feature full coverage Santoprene seals, lockable latches, spring-loaded handles, and special compartments for rifle bolts, cleaning supplies and optics.
There are also wheels and a system for strapping luggage to the case.
The first test was the flight between DFW and Johannesburg International airports, followed by a long truck ride to the hunting location.
“When I arrived in Jo-burg, the gun inspectors were curious to find two guns in this compact case,” Sams said. “And in every checkpoint I went through, the inspectors commented on two guns in one case.
“I am suspecting they’re used to seeing much larger cases holding two guns.”
But the real test came when David test fired his primary rifle, the Ruger, topped with a Nikon scope.
“After the 9,000-plus-mile flight, the Nikon scope was still dead-on at the firing range,” David said. “The case showed a few scratches but no dents, just blemishes.
“Even the DSC (Dallas Safari Club) sticker still looks good on it.”
David said he expects he’ll be slapping more stickers on the case.
“It looks like it’s going to be traveling many more miles with me,” he said. “I’d have no qualms about shipping my guns in this case anywhere in the world.”
