U.S. retail sales for recreational boat, accessories and marine services jumped 6 percent in 2011, according to the

Team Performance1National Marine Manufacturers Association.

The figures topped out at $32.3 billion, the first increase since 2006. Boating participation also increased 10 percent to 83 million people, 34.8 percent of adults.

The figures were contained in NMMA’s annual Recreation Boating Statistical Abstract.

Texas led the way in the sales of aluminum powerboats, primarily fishing and pontoon boats, followed by Minnesota and Michigan. Sales nationwide were up 4 percent in 2011.

The recreational boating industry is predominantly comprised of small boats, with 95 percent of the 12.4 million registered boats in the U.S. being 26 feet or less, according to the Abstract. The annual economic impact of boating is an estimated $72 billion.
