Day two proves tougher than day one on Lewisville

IMG 6734Day two of the 2012 Bass Pro Shops Central Open #1 on Lewisville Lake was a lot like day one, with one notable exception — more wind.

Temperatures remained low and a north wind blew hard for most of the day, making fishing extremely difficult for the 178 anglers competing for a berth in the 2013 Bassmaster Classic.

Norman, Okla. angler Bradley Hallman weighed the only five-fish limit of the day for 15 pounds, 8 ounces, and rocketed to the lead with a two-day total of 20 pounds, 4 ounces.

Day one leader Brad Lankford, Wagoner, Okla., didn’t weigh a fish on day two, but remained in 2nd place with 18 pounds, 1 ounce, followed by yesterday’s second place finisher, Arizona angler Josh Bertrand, in third with 18 pounds.

The top 12 anglers advance to the final round tomorrow. The final weigh-in will be held at the Grapevine Bass Pro Shops at 4 p.m.

Last year’s winner, Mark Tucker from St. Louis, Missouri, caught one fish weighing 1 pound, 7 ounces, but it was enough to keep him around tomorrow after finishing day two in 11th place.

“The wind was blowing out of the north and it really muddied up the water,” Tucker said. “It’s really hard to catch them right now and I fished really hard today; tried everything.

“This is one of the toughest tournaments we’ve seen in a long time.”

Tucker said he would love to have a shot at the lake in about three weeks, when the weather warms up and the fish move into shallower water.

“The fish are still deep,” he said.

Angler Chip Porche weighed day one’s big bass with a 7-pound-1-ounce dandy, and backed that up with another big fish on day two that weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces. The two bass put Porche solidly in the top 12 in 7th place.

Day two’s big bass was caught by Norman, Okla. angler Jared Miller and weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces.
