Hero of the day — April 24, 2012

Today’s hero is Alex Arellano from Jacksboro. According to Alex’s dad, Aaron, this was his son’s first turkey hunt during the youth weekend.

“The turkeys were gobbling before the sun was up,” he said. “We set up a hen decoy and set up under a live oak. The sun was up and we herd them fly off the roost. I started to call them in and we had the hens come from are right and the jakes and toms coming from are left. They met in the middle and Alex put my 12 gauge on one, and as soon as he pulled the trigger another turkey stepped in front of the one he was shooting at.

“The next thing we knew, there were two turkeys down with one shot. It was exciting for all of us.”
