Many fishing areas in Southeastern Louisiana have been deemed off-limits to anglers as spilled oil on parts of the Gulf Coast remains untamed. But some Texas anglers have braved threats of oil and found success while fishing Louisiana waters for speckled trout and redfish.
Tim Deveny of Abilene fished the Empire, La., area in mid-May and saw no oil or spill-related contaminants in the water.
“We were in a certain window which permitted us to fish the east side of the delta, and we didn’t see any oil whatsoever,” Deveny said. “We were really fortunate to fish some pristine water.”
Deveny’s group of anglers traveled nearly 20 miles by boat from Venice to fish in waters open to fishing near Empire.
They caught speckled trout, redfish and flounder. By fishing gold spoons and artificial minnows in shallows waters, anglers hauled in good catches of redfish. Most of the bay averages only 4 to 5 feet in depth, and the redfish were taken in 1 to 2 feet of water.
Using live shrimp for speckled trout on a variety of colored jigs, the group of 10 anglers brought home about 250 pounds of fish.
“The speck fishing and the flounder fishing was excellent,” Deveny said. “We caught some 18- to 22-inch speckled trout, which is not record length, but the bite was really on for specks.”
