Fans of big bass and professional anglers won't want to miss the action in store next weekend near the border.
The EverStart Series is headed to Lake Amistad Feb. 2-4, where as many as 300 pros and co-anglers take to the water for the first of four stops in the Texas Division.
According to Huntington, Texas FLW Tour pro Keith Combs, the fishing on Amistad has been excellent so far this year.
“They are definitely catching fish right now on Amistad and the fishing has been very good,” said Combs. “This is going to be a better than average tournament. With what I’ve seen lately, I think it’s going to take 70 pounds to win this tournament.
Combs said the mild weather should play a big part in where the winning bag is caught.
“We’ve had a very mild winter here so far,” Combs continued. “Based on the weather, I think this one will probably be won out of the grass. They are pulling water through the lake real hard right now, and the lake levels are going to be dropping.
“If it gets cold and with the lower water levels, the bass might move out and there is a pretty good chance that this tournament could be won on the ledges.”
Combs said the winter crankbait bite will be key.
“There will definitely be a lot of cranking going on,” he said. “They are going to be throwing a lot of crankbaits and swimbaits. I'd throw a Strike King 6XD. They’re also going to catch them casting a big Senko. I definitely think the Alabama rig could be a big factor in this tournament as well.”
Banned at the Bassmaster Classic and other elite series, the multi-bait Alabama rig will be legal in this tournament.
Anglers will take off from the East Diablo Launch Ramp located at Highway 90 West HCR 3 in Del Rio, at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Weigh-in will be held at the East Diablo Launch Ramp on Thursday and Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday’s final weigh-in will be held at Walmart located at 2410 Dodson Street in Del Rio beginning at 4 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
