With the boaters away, the anglers will play.
 
Lone Star Outdoor News Operations Manager, Mike Hughs, fished Cedar Creek Reservoir, located near Athens, this past weekend as a part of his Dallas-based Century Bass Club’s tournament trail, where he finished 3rd place out of 26 anglers. He brought back a positive report and said that the rainy weather could have actually been beneficial for the group.
 
“There’s thousands and thousands of boat houses, and tons of recreational traffic,” he said. “But it was almost totally dead on the lake, which is unusual and surprising to me. It could have been the weather — a little cool and rainy, but it was very nice.”
 
Fishing around the many docks was key for most of the tournament anglers. Hughs said he caught about 20 bass around shallow docks, throwing chrome- or shad-patterned crankbaits and shaky heads.
 
“Bait fish were prevalent and pretty much everywhere,” he said. “The sporadic weather seemed to help; it does seem like the fish are starting to turn on and move into the shallow to feed on the shad. About half the anglers caught their limits, or more.”
 
Despite the good numbers of bass being boated, the size of the fish weren’t breaking any records.
 
“The big fish of the day for the tourney was about 5.5 pounds, with an average overall of about 2 pounds,” he said. “Overall, it fished better than people thought.”
