Doe days with a hint of spring

craighuntLone Star Outdoor News founder David J. Sams and Executive Editor Craig Nyhus are currently hunting on a ranch near Pearsall with a Managed Lands Deer Permit.

The pair has been doing a little herd management this morning, with David shooting two does and Craig chipping in with one.

Craig was in the blind at first light, and reported the first noise he and his guide heard was a reminder that spring is fast approaching in South Texas.

“Sitting in the blind this morning and the first thing that woke up was a turkey,” Craig said. “He gobbled at first light and made his way to the feeder. It’s a little early, so I think he might have just been doing his best rooster impression.

“Driving around, we’ve probably seen a hundred birds.”

The pair reported lots of spooky deer — the result of constant herd management the past few days on the ranch.

“We’ve been creeping along and looking around the corners of senderos,” Craig added. “We stayed out until lunch, and everyone is napping at the moment.”

Craig said they did see a really nice, 160-class eight-point buck with a 10-inch drop tine.

“Body size is down on the deer we’ve seen, but the antlers still look good,” he said. “We are hunting the brush country, but it isn’t as thick as it is around Laredo.”

The meat from the hunt will be donated to the needy. Check the Feb. 10 issue of Lone Star Outdoor News for a follow-up story on the meat donation.
