Coastal fishing report

High winds, high tides, fresh water and full moon all tugged at the best anglers on the coast last week. Some had tough days, some got lucky. In Port Mansfield and south, more catching reports came in from deeper water spots and the shallow water fishermen reported more casting. Top waters worked better when cloudy, but the soft plastic bite was the key in most places. Lots of trout that will be legal next month were caught and small redfish seemed to be the norm. A few rockport anglers reported catching some flounder too.

Capt. Nathan Beabout sent in this report from the Port O’Connor area. “Two days of sight casting with this crew was a lot of fun. Day one was slow and a lot of undersized reds. Had several good reds refuse to touch anything we threw at them. Day two we changed our location, and with some much better winds, was able to spend the morning casting to reds crawling down the bank. Nothing better than watching these fish crush a lure you made a perfect pitch on. Soft plastics and scented soft plastics  rigged on a 1/4 oz jig got the job done.”

Monday morning saw some lower tides in the Rockport area and many anglers reported slower winds as the day went on.
