Trout hitting on top at Galveston

Even sharks won’t keep James Hair of Galveston from wading out while the speckled trout fishing is good.

“A lot of blacktip sharks are being caught on the piers on cut bait,” he said. “The water is blue — it finally cleared up — and the ocean is flat as a board,” he said.

Despite the possibility of a razor-toothed fish swimming at his knees, Hair has taken advantage of the recent mild weather.

“Fishing is good right now,” he said. “Trout and reds are the big fish right now, but there are a lot of flounder for this time of year.”

Hair said Galveston Bay is holding minimum seaweed right now, and that bodes well for the fishing.

“I think our seaweed situation is over for this year,” he said. “A lot of fish are being caught early in the morning, with a tremendous amount of baitfish around right now.”

Using silver and chartreuse top-water baits have been working the best for him.

Let’s hope the same top-waters don’t attract blacktips.troutt
