It’s almost here. That first real trip to the deer lease.
Sure, there was a work weekend several months ago, and you’ve been out to check feeder batteries, fill barrels with corn and set timers. All of the prep work is done. It’s almost time to hunt.
If you are like me, the “leaving home” checklist also has to be complete before you can truly leave town. Do the kids have a ride to sports practice? Do I need to pre-plan dinner for the ones who get home late? Is work buttoned up? Does my wife know I am going hunting? (kidding) Do I have my hunting license?
Next, make sure the weather reports are still accurate and that cold front is still on the way. Do I leave at O-dark-thirty to get there in time for a morning hunt or leave at lunch to arrive for an afternoon sit?
Important decisions will be made soon. Which stand should I go to? Who has been seeing bucks? Are the mature bucks starting to show up during daylight hours? It’s about time to get answers to some questions that have been burning for months.
The anticipation is one of the best parts of deer season. Dreaming about the moment that buck steps out and it all comes together.
Cool mornings and evenings have arrived. It’s go time tomorrow, and I can’t wait.
